  • What is Paws? - PAWS (PAWS Animal Welfare Society) is a non-profit animal shelter in Petaling Jaya that has been in operation since 1987. We receive the surrender of unwanted dogs and cats which we will vaccinate, deworm, neuter/spay, and put up for adoption.Currently, there are over 250 dogs and 250 cats under the care of the shelter. The shelter and all costs involved in running it are entirely funded by the generous donations of the public as well as proceeds from charitable events. The PAWS team consists of three office staff, a number of part-time veterinarians, one vet assistant and seven kennel workers. PAWS is a registered Society under the Registry of Societies of Malaysia that is led by an elected committee
  • When you volunteer at PAWS, you can choose to spend time with any animal that you want and do the work that you enjoy.
  • If you do not have any specific activities you would like to carry out at the shelter, you will be assigned to the activities which may include cleaning the shelter area and spending time with the animals. As volunteers, you must be able to work independently as there will be minimal supervision and guidance during the volunteering activities.

  • The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) is a sun bear rescue and rehabilitation facility being developed in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. There are currently 43 rescued ex-captive sun bears residing at the BSBCC. The facility includes large forest enclosures to provide a natural environment suited to the needs and welfare of the sun bears and facilitate their rehabilitation back into the wild.In 2014, the Centre opens to the public. Visitors can learn about sun bears and observe them in their natural habitat.
  • Volunteers from all over the world are welcomed to join the centre’s conservation effort to help rehabilitate these sun bears. Through the centre’s volunteering programme, volunteers have to opportunity to work with dedicated biologists and researchers as well as learning how wildlife conservation is being carried out on site.
  •  Volunteers will learn about the importance of creating enrichment programmes for the sun bears, the importance of maintaining the cleanliness of the centre, observe the sun bears behaviour and diet and so much more!. It is a great volunteering programme for anyone who is interested to know more about animal conservation or just to get their hands dirty and do something meaningful while travelling.

7. Project Orangutan

  • Orangutan Project is a Malaysian conservation organisation and UK based charity. Founder and CEO Leo Biddle started Orangutan Project in 2006. Leo has over 20 years experience working in the conservation sector in the developing world and is one of the pioneers of truly ethical wildlife tourism. Leo set up a volunteer project at Matang Wildlife Centre, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Volunteers pay to participate and those funds are used to better the lives of the animals at the centre.
  • We treat our volunteers on these projects as temporary members of staff. We expect you to participant in any and all jobs that are required for the centre’s maintenance and development. We do not necessarily save ‘best’ jobs for volunteers, or ‘worst’ jobs (though it may sometimes feel that way!). Jobs range from construction tasks, to farming work, to enrichment – enrichment is a really fun task that gives you the opportunity to entertain and observe the animals.

8. Zoo Melaka

  • Melaka Zoo has been in operation since 1963. Over the past few years our volunteers have been assisting the local staff to develop the zoo into an open concept zoo, this is still in the early stages of development, with a focus on improving the enclosures and living conditions of the animals at the zoo, for example building platforms and swings for the orang-utans, climbing structures for the sun bears, and structures to provide shade for the mandrills.
  • As a volunteer working in Melaka Zoo you will undertake a wide range of activities with the aim of improving the general living conditions of the animals at the zoo, as well as developing and implementing enrichment activities, increasing awareness of animal rights and welfare within the zoo and other zoos throughout Malaysia.
